Indian Institutes of Technology are the most sought after Engineering schools of India. Three years after the first IIT was set up, the Indian parliament declared these as institutes of national importance. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. As on date, there are 23 IITs in India with a total of 11,032 seats (approximate and subject to change).
Why IITs
Backed by funds from Central government, the IITs are hosts to some of the best research facilities in the country.
The faculty student ratio ranges from 1:10 to 1:12 with some of the older IITs having slightly higher ratios. Students get high-quality training in Engineering from faculty recruited from all over the world.
IITs boast of a very high placement percentage with students getting placed in some of the best companies in the tech industry both in India and abroad.
How does one get into IITs?

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common engineering entrance examination which is conducted for admission in IITs / NITs / IIITs across India plus various state engineering colleges which are part of JEE system.

It is regarded as one of the most challenging engineering admission tests. Exam has two parts: JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

In order to get admitted into the undergraduate programs in IIT, a candidate needs to clear Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) apart from completing his 12th standard with minimum 75% marks or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.
Main points to know about JEE Main:

JEE Main, or JEE Mains as some call, is a national level test administered in the month of April. The exam can be taken by paper (offline) or online.

The exam consists of 90 multiple choice questions each worth 4 points for a total of 360 points. 0.25 points will be deducted for each incorrect response.

There will be 30 questions each in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry and the exam is 3hours long.
-
The top 2,20,000 rankers of the JEE (Main) will qualify to appear for JEE (Advanced).
JEE Main vs JEE Advanced Highlights
JEE Main 2020 ranks will be based on the percentile scores of the students in both the sessions, with the better of the two scores used in case the candidate has appeared for both January and April sessions. JEE Advanced is conducted by IITs for admission in 23 IITs in the country. Nearly 12 lakh candidates register for JEE Main out of which only top 2.5 lakh rank holders of JEE Main exam are eligible for JEE Advanced.
